Abstract:The traditional smelting process of bismuth sulphide concentrate faces problems of low metallic bismuth recovery, high production cost and low-concentration SO2 flue gas pollution. In this study, a clean and efficient smelting process was developed to directly extract bismuth metal from bismuthinite concentrate. The reaction mechanism and phase transformation laws were confirmed by thermodynamic simulation calculation, TG-MS thermal analysis and phase characterization. Firstly, Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 interacted with Bi2S3 to form Bi2O3. The intermediate Bi2O3 was then reduced into metallic Bi, and the element S was fixed as FeS. Results of the smelting simulation experiments showed that 89.25% metallic Bi was recovered. About 38.17% Pb, 33.92% Cu, and 83.98% Ag were enriched in crude bismuth, and 96.37% S was fixed in the matte as raw material for resource recovery and energy utilisation.
