Personal Profile
Teacher homepageWenbin Zhou, Professor at the Institute of Light Alloy Research, the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and the State Key Laboratory of Precision Manufacturing for Extreme Service Performance at Central South University, China. He is a doctoral supervisor and a recipient of China's National High-Level Young Talent Program (Overseas) and Hunan Province's Furong Program for High-Level Young Talents. He received his bachelor's degree in Engineering Mechanics from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, followed by a master's degree in Solid Mechanics at Peking University, where he worked in the research group of Academician Daining Fang. He subsequently earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College London, supported by the President's PhD Scholarship, and received the Unwin Postgraduate Prize for an outstanding doctoral thesis.
During his doctoral and postdoctoral research, Professor Zhou was supervised by Professor Jianguo Lin, a leading scholar in metal forming and materials modelling and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. His research focuses on advanced forming and manufacturing technologies for high-performance lightweight alloys, composites, and structures. In particular, he investigates material and structural deformation, microstructural evolution, and failure mechanisms under coupled multiphysics fields, including thermal, mechanical, and electrochemical effects. His research aims to uncover the fundamental relationships between materials processing, microstructure, and in-service performance, providing theoretical foundations and technological solutions for lightweight structural design, advanced manufacturing, materials recycling, and emerging energy technologies. Professor Zhou developed the Differential Velocity Sideways Extrusion (DVSE) technique, an innovative forming method that enables the efficient, high-performance manufacturing of lightweight, streamlined curved profiles. The technology has been granted international patent protection.
Before joining Central South University, Professor Zhou served as an Assistant Professor/Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Dundee, UK. He led projects funded by the Royal Society and the Scotland Beyond Net Zero Seed Fund, and contributed to research projects supported by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and Innovate UK. Professor Zhou has published more than 30 papers as first or corresponding author in leading journals in materials mechanics, metal forming, and manufacturing, including International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture, International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, Journal of Materials Processing Technology, and Composites Part B: Engineering, etc. He serves on the editorial boards of SCI-indexed journals, including Scientific Reports (JCR Q1) and Science Progress (SAGE Publishing, JCR Q2), and has served as a Guest Editor for Metals. He is also a reviewer for numerous international journals, including International Journal of Mechanical Sciences, Journal of Materials Science & Technology, Journal of Manufacturing Processes, Journal of Cleaner Production, Resources, Conservation & Recycling, Chinese Journal of Aeronautics, and Composites Part B: Engineering, etc.
Applications are welcome for Ph.D. students, master's students, and postdoctoral researchers starting in 2027.
We welcome motivated candidates from diverse academic backgrounds, including mechanical engineering, mechanics, materials science and engineering, computer science, and related disciplines. If you are interested in advanced manufacturing, lightweight materials and structures, multiphysics modelling, or the relationship between material processing, microstructure, and performance, we encourage you to get in touch.
