Chao Wu (1957-) is full professor at the Department of Resources Exploitation Engineering of Central South University of Technology (1991-1999) and full professor at the School of Resources and Safety Engineering of Central South University (2000-2022). He also served as the vice-dean during the period of May 2002 to Jul. 2014. He also had been a senior certified safety evaluation engineer (2004-2013). He has over ten important academic titles, including member of Higher School of Safety Science and Engineering of Teaching Guidance Committee of China Ministry of Education (2004-2017), member of China Work Safety Committee (2009-2018), member of editorial board of China Safety Science Journal (2008-present), etc..
During the period of Sept. 1986 to Jan. 1988, he was a visiting researcher worked at Lulea University of Technology in Sweden. During the period of Mar. to Dec. 1999, he was a visiting professor at the University of Nevada-Reno and at the Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in the USA.
During the past more than thirty years, he has been engaged in the teaching and research activities in the fields of safety science and mine safety engineering. He opened more than ten courses for undergraduate and post-graduate students. He has supervised more than 100 master's and doctoral students graduated during the past 30 years. He had won 22 awards from the National and Provincial Agencies of China. He has published more than 500 papers of which most of them were published in Chinese Journals and more than 160 articles were cited in Scopus. He also published more than 40 monographs and textbooks.
During 1982-2003, his key research fields were mine ventilation, mine environmental protection, dust suppressants and spontaneous combustion control of sulfide ores. Some typical books published are Particle Adhesion and Removal, Chemical Suppression of Dust, Mine Ventilation and Air Conditioning, Ventilation and Air Conditioning for Underground Space Engineering, Heavy Metal Pollution and Control in Mining Environment, Prediction and Forecast of Spontaneous Combustion of Sulfide Ores -- Theory and Technology, etc..
Since 2004, he turned his research interest to the field of safety & security science theory and new discipline construction of safety & security, and published more than two hundreds theoretical papers and twelve books, such as New Disciplines of Safety Science, Methodology of Safety Science, Safety Statistics, Comparative Safety Science, Similar Safety Systematics, Safety & Security Informatics, Safety Culturology, etc.. Also, he built the Safety & Security Theory Innovation and Promotion Center of Central South University in 2017.
He became a retired professor of Central South University in Sept. 2022, but he is still active in the research fields of safety & security theory and new discipline construction.
