Personal Information
Professor Yuanjie Xiao holds a B.S. (Tongji University) and a M.S. (Southeast University), both in Civil Engineering, and a M.S. in Theoretical & Applied Mechanics and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He joined the faculty of the Department of Geotechnical Engineering at the Central South University's School of Civil Engineering in November 2014.
Dr. Xiao has taught undergraduate courses in soil mechanics, foundation treatment & reinforcement, and professional english for civil engineering.
Dr. Xiao is an affiliate of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) and has actively participated in several TRB committees including AFP70, AFP30, AFS50, and AFD80. More recently, he has been selected as the 2013 recipient of the TRB's Geology and Properties of Earth Materials Section Best Paper Award for his paper, "Gradation Effects Influencing Mechanical Properties of Aggregate Base Granular Subbase Materials in Minnesota." The paper was nominated by AFP70 Mineral Aggregates Committee. He was also the recipient of the Professor's training course scholarship jointly sponsored by the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) and Auburn University in 2011. He was recognized as a young professional at the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)'s Geo-Institute Summit in 2011.
Since August 2008, Dr. Xiao has been active members of the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA), the International Society for Concrete Pavements (ISCP), the ASCE Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI), the ASCE Geo-Institute's Pavements Committee, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He has also served as the peer-reviewer for several academic journals including Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering, Road Materials and Pavement Design, International Journal of Pavement Research & Technology, International Journal of Pavement Engineering, KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering, Journal of Testing and Evaluation, Journal of Transportation Research Record, Journal of ASTM International (JAI), and International Journal of Transportation Geotechnics.
Prof. Xiao has research interests and expertise in testing and modeling of pavement and railroad track geo-materials, ie. base/ballast unbound aggregates; recycled aggregates and their unbound applications; shape, texture, angularity characterization of aggregates using video-imaging techniques; modeling of particulate media using discrete and finite element methods; and mechanistic based pavement design.
