Name of Research Group:Biosurface/interface Science and Applications
Description of Research Group:Based on the study of microstructures, chemical forms and mechanisms of microorganism - mineral (material) interface based on synchrotron radiation light source, omics and supercomputing, to explore the influential mechanisms on the interfacial electron transfer by microbial iron and sulfur redox metabolism, mineral surface structure and chemical occurrence forms, electron transfer media and so on; evaluate the mechanism of influence of iron sulfur redox in biometallurgy, heavy metal biogeochemistry, and energy cycle and so on, and develop the principles of synthetic biology based on iron sulfur metabolism and surface/interface interaction, and its application coupling with biotechnology for energy transformation, material manufacturing, and environmental treatment.

Description of Research Group:Mainly focused on the basic researches on metabolism, structure, function and application of extreme microbial and/or biological functional components, and develop the principles of synthetic biology and bionic preparation technology. Further research on microalgae and bulk biomass (fiber, chitin, pectin, etc.) for microbial strain breeding, biological (Qualitative) transformation, fermentation process and synthetic biology, and the development of biomass energy and environmental material preparation technology.

Personal Information
Mr. Xia Jinlan, Outstanding Younger University Teacher of China and Outstanding Faculty of Central South University(CSU), born in February 1964. Ph.D of Biochemistry, one of the major academic leaders of Microbiology/Bioengineering in CSU, Full Senior Professor, Doctoral Tutor, mainly research on Biohydrometallurgy, Extreme environmental microorganisms, Bioenergy and Biomaterials, Biological/Bionic design and manufacturing. From 1981 to 1988, studied in Wuhan University for bachelor's and master's degrees in analytical chemistry; From 1988 to 1993,as assistant and lecturer in CSU, engaged in (biological) analytical chemistry teaching and biological functional materials development; From 1993 to 1999, studied in Belgium (FPMs, Mons University), researched on biosynthesis of special proteins and polysaccharides by cyanobacteria, and received PhD in biochemistry; Back home in early 2000, as a professor, Central South University School of Minerals Processing and Bioengineering, engaged in microbiology/bioengineering teaching, scientific research and talent training management. In 2004, was chosen as doctoral tutor of Biology (microbiology, bioengineering), and was rated as Senior Professor in 2013. Host and undertook more than 30 scientic projects,including the national major basic research projects("973"), the national High-tech projects("863"), the projects of national Natural Science Fundation of China for Innovation Group, the National Natural Science Fundation of China Projects, the national major basic Science equipment fundation project and so on. As the first author and/or corresponding author, published more than 200 academic papers in well-known publications, including more than 120 papers of ESI/SCI/EI. Application for national Invention Patents 15, authorized 9. Presided over 7 teaching reform items such as the training mode of bioengineering talents and the cultivation of innovative talents of speciality bioengineering. Teaching the basic and professional courses, such as biochemistry, by using the advanced original English textbooks, and acquired 6 awards of excellent quality of teaching, and 6 achievement awards of teaching reforms. Already trained 18 doctoral students and 58 postgraduate students up to now (2020,9). In the recent years, the most important scientific research for him is “Characterization of interfacial interaction between sulfur oxidizing microbes and sulfide minerals”, in which mainly by using of synchrotron radiation facilities techniques (XANES, XRD, micro-XRF and STXM) and electrochemical and comparative proteomics methodologies, the S/Fe/Cu speciation transformation, extracellular substances and S/Fe bonding states during interaction between major sulfide minerals (chalcopyrite, pyrite and elemental sulfur) and typical sulfur/ferrous oxidizing microbes were characterized.
