Liyuan Chai graduated from Central South University of Technology and received the doctoral degree of non-ferrous metallurgy in 1997.Chai is a professor at Central South University. He is the awardee of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and Changjiang Distinguished Professor of the Ministry of Education. He is the dean of School of metallurgy and environment, director of the Chinese National Engineering Research Center for Control & Treatment of Heavy Metal Pollution, and director of State Environmental Protection Engineer Center for Pollution Control of Nonferrous Metal Industry.
His researches focus on the heavy metal emission reduction and resource recycling. He led more than 80 major national research projects, published more than 300 papers indexed by SCI and more than 100 invention patents. The technology "Advanced Treatment and Reuse of Wastewater Containing Heavy Metals by Biologics" was awarded the Second Prize of State Technological Invention Award. This technology is widely applied in non-ferrous metallurgical industries.
