Zhiyuan Li,Professor,Sheng-Hua Scholar, Director of Anatomy and Neurobiology, Xiang-Ya School of Medicine, Central South University.
Dr Li earned his Bachelor degree in Medicine from Hunan Medical College in 1988, Master degree in Neurobiology from Hunan Medical University in 1994, and PhDs in Pharmacology from Central South University in 1997 and Nutrition from Tokushima University in 2000. He was a Postdoctoral research associate under supervision by Dr. Alan Brash’s lab in Clinical Pharmacology of Vanderbilt University from 2000-2003. Dr. Li served as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology, Saint Louis University School of Medicine, from 2003-2008. Dr. Li joined Chinese Academy of Sciences as a Principal Investigator in the end of 2008 and now served as the director for Anatomy Department of Central South University.
Professor Li is an internationally recognised in pharmacology and neurobiology research leader. Over the last 5 years, he has won more than 20 grants (about 30.1 millions Yuan totally) from Chinese central and local governments to support my ongoing research projects.He has published more than 60 peer-review papers, 9 book chapters. 20 Chinese patents were submitted or approved.
Professor Li study on cell membrane ion channels with electrophysiological method patch clamp technique. 1) He has successfully described the efficient generation of human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) of unaffected individuals and diabetes, SMA, Parkinson’s, LNS and Nav mutant epilepsy patients, and then system recorded ion channels properties on these differentiated functional beta cells and neurons. 2) His group used genetic manipulations to produce recombinant P2X proteins and electrophysiology to study its function. His data firstly shown that TM1 is helical but TM2 is not. 3) He has identified an intracellular protein, sorting nexin 11 (SNX11), which regulates the trafficking of the TRPV3 to plasma membrane from intracellular. Co-expression of SNX11 in TRPV3 transfected HEK293T cells and the 2-APB sensitive TRPV3 currents were measured by whole cell patch clamping. 4) His group have successfully established in a stably transformed mammalian cell line expressing in his lab. Then they study the functions of the M2 ion channel, screened more than hundreds of compounds and identified several hits which high efficacy block both wild type and mutants M2 ion channels. 5) He demonstrated tetra-n-octylammonium bromide and benzethonium chloride blocked the HERG channel with a preference for the activated channel state. These widely used environmental chemicals may be the risk for human health.
