Essentially commuting block Toeplitz and Hankel operators

  • Abstract:We characterize when the commutator of a block Hankel operator and a block Toeplitz operator is zero or compact on the vector-valued Hardy space of the unit disk via properties of harmonic extensions of the symbols and Douglas algebras generated by the symbols. As an application, we give a new proof of the characterization of essentially commuting scalar Hankel and Toeplitz operators on the Hardy space [18].
