Dissolution behavior of nickel-based superalloy in molten zinc: Its mechanism and kinetics

摘要:Comprehensive recycling of spent Ni-based superalloys for metal reclamation is essential in approaching sustainability and securing the supply of relevant critical metals. The treatment of superalloy scraps with liquid Zn represents a promising approach towards metal reclamation in an efficient and environmentally benign manner. In this paper, the dissolution behavior of the Ni-based superalloy (Inconel 718) in liquid Zn was experimentally studied for its dissolution mechanism and kinetics. The results show that the selective dissolution of Ni and Fe by liquid Zn resulted in a continuous shrinking of the unreacted core and the growth and evolution of a non-rigid diffusion zone, in which micron-sized Cr-Fe alloy particles were dispersed. The rate of dissolution is controlled by the resulting reaction interface progressing inwards with an apparent activation energy of 223 kJ/mol.
