Professor Guangsen Zhang studied in Central South University, Xiangya medical School （Former Hunan Medical School） and got his Master degree in 1984. He has been working as hematologist and physician in the Second Xiangya Hospital until present. In the early 90s of last century, he spent three years in Department of hematology, School of medicine, Washington University in St. Louis to study “the mechanism of Thrombosis formation”. In 2002, he visited and studied the “Hematological Malignancy” in Department of Oncology/Hematology, BID medical Center, Harvard University as senior visit Scholar.
Professor Zhang endeavored himself in both clinic work and scientific research during his medical career. As a sophisticated physician and famous scientist, he did excellent work in both clinical medicine and basic medicine.
Professor Zhang's team published 28 original articles in the international journals ( Science Citation Index) with high citation rate, including the most famous clinical journal, “The Lancet”(IF 45.217). His study focused mainly in two fields, Hematologic malignancy and Thrombosis and hemostasis. The most resent breakthrough of his study was about GTF2I-RARA, a novel fusion transcript in a t(7;17) variant of acute promyelocytic leukemia with clinical resistance to retinoic acid. (Br J Heamatol,2015), which was indexed by the Genbank (National Center for Biotechnology Information, NCBI).
As a senior Doctoral Supervisor, professor Zhang tutored and guided 42 under graduated students (doctor degree 22 and Master degree 20). He is also a creditworthy presenter, who recommended 5 young clinic doctors to study in the most famous medical center of United States to study the pioneer technique and theory of hematology.
Under the leadership of Professor Zhang, the department of hematology and himself achieved various honors and awards in both clinic and basic medicine, such as “National key specialty construction of clinical projects (2011)”, “Science and Technology Award of Chinese Medical Association (2006)” First Prize of Medical science and technology progress awards (2000,Hunan Province)”, and “First Prize of science and technology progress awards (2005,Hunan Province)”, etc.
