I am Jianping Xie, a Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at the School of Minerals Processing and Bioengineering, Central South University (CSU). I specialize in mineral processing and precious metal biohydrometallurgy.
I received my Ph.D. in Microbiology through a joint training program between CSU and the University of Oklahoma, where I was fortunate to work with Dr. Jizhong Zhou, a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and recipient of the U.S. Presidential Award. I also completed my postdoctoral research in Mining Engineering under the mentorship of Dr. Guanzhou Qiu, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
My research focuses on resources and environmental engineering, with particular emphasis on precious metal biohydrometallurgy and environmental biotechnology. My main research interests include: biosorption of platinum group metals and their conversion into functional materials, green recovery of low-concentration precious metals from waste solutions, synthesis and application of bio-nano materials, and biohydrometallurgical processing of refractory mineral resources. I have developed specialized expertise in microbial recovery of platinum group metals from secondary resources, preparation of bio-based nano-catalysts, and advanced treatment of complex industrial wastewater.
I have led more than 10 national and provincial research projects, including the National Key R&D Program of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (General Program and Young Scientists Fund), the Major Science and Technology Special Project of Yunnan Province, and the Special Funding of the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation. I have also collaborated with over 20 industry partners on technology development and application. I have published 93 SCI papers in journals such as Nature Climate Change, PNAS, Nanotechnology, Journal of Hazardous Materials, and Hydrometallurgy, and hold 36 authorized invention patents. I am a recipient of the Second Prize of China Nonferrous Metals Industry Science and Technology Award. My research has been successfully applied in industrial practice, including recovery of platinum group metals, bio-preoxidation of refractory gold ores, and industrial wastewater treatment.
I currently serve as Chief Scientist of Yunnan Precious Metals New Materials Holding Group Co., Ltd. and Yunnan Precious Metals Laboratory Co., Ltd., where I work to advance the industrialization of biohydrometallurgical technologies. I am also Deputy Director of the Hunan Engineering Technology Research Center for Heavy Pollution Industrial Wastewater Treatment and Resource Utilization, focusing on the treatment and resource recovery of heavy metal-containing industrial wastewater. I serve as Vice Chairman of the 6th Professional Committee of Microecology, Hunan Preventive Medicine Association, and Deputy Director of the Editorial Board of Progress in Modern Biomedicine. Previously, I served as Deputy County Mayor of Shiqian County, Guizhou Province, and as Senior Technical Consultant for the Zambia Biohydrometallurgy Technology Industrialization Demonstration Base of China Nonferrous Metal Mining (Group) Co., Ltd. These experiences have given me valuable insights into bridging academic research with industrial applications and international engineering collaboration.
