Research Group

  • Name of Research Group:Lab of Geohazards Perception,Cognition &Prediction

Description of Research Group:In order to solve the scientific problems of solid earth hazard monitoring and analysis, and enrich the connotation and characteristics of the subject of geohazards mitigation, Central South University (CSU) established the Laboratory of Geohazards Perception, Cognition & Prediction (Lab GeoHazards PCP) in 2017, under the leadership of Prof. Lixin Wu, the Yangtze River Scholar. The laboratory focuses on the synergistic observation (perception), comprehensive understanding (cognition), and process analysis (prediction) of near-surface hazards such as tectonic earthquake, verified landslide, rock burst, glacier surge, ground subsidence, urban waterlogging, regional flood, aerosol anomaly, and ionospheric disturbance.
The laboratory now has 9 permanent staff (including 3 professors and 6 associate professors), and has taken the lead in a number of national projects, such as the National Key Research and Development Program and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (key projects). The laboratory has long been engaged in the research of space information technology, satellite remote sensing applications and ground disaster perception, and has made a series of innovative achievements in infrared and microwave remote sensing of catastrophes, coordinated observation of air and sky in the disaster area, and multiscale three-dimensional modelling, etc., and developed the theory of remote sensing anomaly identification and root-finding method for earthquake anomalies. In-depth joint observation experiments of microwave, infrared, acoustic emission, deformation and other covariates in the process of rock loaded to fracturing and analysis of the mechanism have been carried out; multi-parameter anomaly identification of earthquakes, fusion of heterogeneous information from multiple sources, and research on typical earthquake cases at home and abroad, and the Deviation-Time-Space (DTS) criterion for the study of spatial-temporal correlation of seismic anomalies have been put forward, and the application of which has revealed dozens of pre-seismic earthquake anomalies at home and abroad with regard to the surface infrared, microwave brightness temperature, latent heat of the atmosphere, atmospheric composition, atmospheric electric field, magnetic susceptibility, and ionosphere disturbance; and proposed the paradigm of coupled analysis and synergistic sensing of seismic anomalies in multiple layers, such as the lithosphere-coversphere-atmosphere-ionosphere coupling.
In the past five years, using optical, multispectral, infrared, microwave and other satellite images, we have carried out in-depth satellite remote sensing analysis of earthquakes, landslides and floods in Southwest China, the Tibetan Plateau, West Asia, Central Asia, South Asia, Central Europe, etc., and have accumulated a foundation of remote sensing identification of major natural disaster and assess hazard risk, and have accumulated a wealth of experience. The research outputs have been applied to the identification of landslide hazards in Hunan Province and the Three Gorges Reservoir Area, and the monitoring of glacial leaping hazards in Xinjiang, etc. In the past 10 years, the laboratory has participated in the international training programs on disaster reduction organized by the Asia-Pacific Space Co-operation Organization (APSCO), Pakistan, and Bangladesh as a lecturer for many times. In 2019, the laboratory had organized the ‘Summer Workshop on Disaster Prevention and Mitigation for the “One Belt, One Road” with Space Information Technology Service’. In October 2019, the 1st International Symposium on Geo-Hazards Perception, Cognition and Prediction was successfully held, with participants from China (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan), Italy, Russia, the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom and other countries and regions, as well as from the European Space Agency, the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO) and other related fields attending the conference, which demonstrated and exchanged the international cutting-edge advances in ground hazard perception and cognitive prediction research.
In terms of international cooperation, the laboratory has established a close partnership with Chapman University in the United States, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in Italy, the University of Athens in Greece, the University of the Punjab in Pakistan, and many other professional institutions as well as international scientific communities.
